A neuropsychological assessment involves the testing of our thinking skills or cognitive ability. The assessment involves various tests designed to assess many areas of thinking including intelligence, attention, memory and executive functions (i.e. planning, reasoning, judgement, organisation), social functioning and mood.
The results from testing are compared to the average population and are used in combination with personal information such as medical history, education and work history. This provides comprehensive information about a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and is used to inform appropriate diagnoses and guide intervention.
A neuropsychological assessment can be used for a range of reasons depending on the needs and concerns of the individual and the family. For both children and adults, an assessment may assist with diagnosis of neurodevelopment conditions (i.e. Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), a Specific Learning Disorder (i.e. dyslexia) or be used to assess a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses following brain injury or insult.
Neuropsychological assessments also provide an overview of one’s current emotional, social and day to day functioning which in combination with cognitive skills assists in informing tailored treatment programs for goal achievement.
At Wild Flower Neuropsychology the assessment process is typically divided into three to four sessions.
Firstly, a 1-hour intake session is conducted with the client (or client’s parents for children). This session allows for a comprehensive history taking including overview of current concerns and goals for the assessment process. This session can be conducted via tele-health if needed. If necessary, private consultations are scheduled separately with teachers or other relevant medical or allied health professionals, as part of the assessment process.
The testing sessions typically involves two x 2-hour face-to-face consults for neuropsychological assessment. This involves the completion of a tailored and individualised battery of cognitive tests.
Lastly, a final feedback session with the client (or clients parents for children) is conducted approximately three to four weeks following the assessment. In this session, the results of the assessment are discussed along with intervention plan and tailored recommendations. This session can be conducted via tele-health if needed.
The full neuropsychological report is emailed following the final feedback session. Reports can be structured for the purpose of NDIS application or review, if applicable.
A referral from a GP or medical professional is not necessary in order to obtain a neuropsychological assessment, although many children and young people will be referred by a doctor.
We also welcome referrals from schools and other allied health professionals, including speech pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists.
We see children, teenagers, adolescents and adults. This is usually between the age of 5 and 65, however, we can offer older adult assessments. If in doubt, please get in touch to see if we can help.
The current 2024 waitlist for appointment scheduling is approximately 8-10 weeks.
We do our best to accommodate more urgent assessments, where possible.
A cancellation waitlist is available. Please let us know if you wish to be added to the cancellation list.
We charge $280 per hour of face-to-face consultation, assessment, intervention or support time. This includes all tests and materials. There is no additional charge for brief verbal or written communication between other health professionals and educators. Report writing time is also charged at $280 per hour.
All up, a typical, comprehensive neuropsychological assessment takes around eight and to twelve hours. This includes around six hour hours of face-to-face assessment time and a detailed report. A very complex assessment, or one that will be used for medico-legal purposes will require a little longer.
We encourage you to get in touch, so that we can provide you with a specific quote and accurate information based the individual circumstance.
Please note, neuropsychological assessment is not covered by a mental health treatment plan but you may be able to claim some of the assessment back on your private health fund (if eligible).

We understand that not all children or adults require a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment yet many people are still unsure about the best ways to support themselves and their overall health and well-being.
The Meet and Treat mini-assessment involves a 1-hour comprehensive intake session to explore developmental, medical and psychological history in addition to current concerns. This is followed by a 1-hour feedback session, approximately 1 week later with tailored treatment recommendations and planning.
In the event that an assessment is required after the initial session, the cost of this will be deducted from the assessment.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email. We will aim to respond to your query within 24 business hours. Please note, clinic days are Monday to Wednesday.
